Speech at a Conference on Imperialism 2024-11-29C

Communist Party – Sweden
November 2024

Comrades,

We live in a world dominated by imperialist oppression—a world where capitalism, has transformed every corner of the planet into an arena for exploitation and conflict. But this order is not eternal. It is doomed to collapse, and our task is to hasten its demise.

Imperialism: The Inherent Crisis of Capitalism

Lenin taught us that imperialism is not a coincidence—it is the inevitable latest stage of capitalism. A stage where monopoly capital, financial oligarchies, and transnational corporations seek domination on a global scale. This creates a world order where resources, labour, and markets in the Global South are drained to generate profits for the wealthy nations.

But this “unified” world market carries within it the seeds of division. Uneven development creates rivalries between imperialist powers and new centers like BRICS, with China and India, which challenge the dominance of the U.S. and the EU.

Capitalism’s Wars and the Climate Crisis

Capitalist expansion has historically led to imperialist wars. The two world wars of the 20th century were not exceptions—they were logical consequences of the struggle for resources and markets. Today, we see the similar patterns in conflicts over strategic minerals and trade routes, the oil of the Middle East and the gas of Central Asia.

But capitalism doesn’t just threaten human lives through war—it threatens all life on Earth through the climate crisis. The wealthy nations, which have profited from centuries of emissions, continue to exploit the planet’s resources while the poor countries bear the brunt of disasters: droughts, floods, and hunger.

The Tools of Imperialism: Propaganda and Violence

To maintain its’ power, imperialism primarily relies on economic dominance, propaganda and military violence. It demonizes its enemies—first communism, then Islam, and tomorrow a new “threat”—all to justify and legitimize its own domination.

Through interventions, sanctions, and wars, it crushes any nation that dares to challenge its power.

But we know imperialism is not only an external oppressor. In many countries, the domestic ruling class betrays its own people to secure a seat at the imperialists’ table. These traitors must be exposed.

Revolutionary Solidarity and the Fight Ahead

Comrades, the program of the Communist Party in Sweden is clear: the struggle of the working class is international in its essence and national to its form. National

independence is crucial, but it must be tied to class struggle and revolution. What does this mean in practice?

  1. We must expose and resist imperialism’s lies and war propaganda. It is our duty to stand with those fighting oppression, whether in the Middle East, Latin America, or Africa.
  2. We must organize a revolutionary movement that unites the oppressed of the world. Solidarity cannot be sentimental—it must be material and concrete.
  3. We must fight our own imperialist ruling class. For those of us in Sweden, this means exposing our country’s role as a minor imperialist power involved in wars, plunder, and exploitation. In particular we must mobilize people against Nato and the horrible Defence Cooperation Agreement.
  4. We must support the Palestinian resistance against Zionism as part of the global struggle against imperialism. Zionism, as a settler-colonial project

backed by imperialist powers, is a cornerstone of oppression in the Middle East. The Israeli state functions as an outpost for U.S. and Western imperialism,

destabilizing the region to maintain imperialist control over resources and strategic territories. Supporting the Palestinian people’s fight for liberation is not only an act of solidarity—it is a revolutionary duty in the global struggle to

dismantle imperialism and its systems of domination.

Conclusion: Make Imperialism the Final Phase of Capitalism

Comrades, Lenin reminded us that imperialism is not a sign of capitalism’s strength—it is its death throes. But this system will not collapse on its own. It demands action,

organization, and revolutionary struggle.

Let us unite in the fight to crush imperialism, not as part of an abstract dream but as a concrete reality. The days of capitalism are numbered, and it is our task to make them as few as possible.

Revolution is necessary. Revolution is possible. And revolution is our duty. Thank you.
